What is Motivational Interviewing?

What is Motivational Interviewing? Motivational Interviewing, or commonly known as "MI," is an evidence based clinical approach that is, at its core, a conversation about change. The intention of this conversation is to partner with an individual and strengthen their own motivation for and commitment to their desired change goal. MI is an evolution of the client-centered works of Carl Rogers in which the philosophical foundations of this approach is grounded in partnership, acceptance, and compassion. While MI is directional, meaning addressing normal and natural ambivalence and working towards change, the goal is never to force or direct change. An MI practitioner aims to guide a person through their own exploration of their values and reasons for change and help them to become ready and succeed in their goal.
